Hallyu superstar Bae Yong Joon (also known as Yon-sama in Japan) is donating 320 million won ($300,000 dollars US) to purchase equipment for the Taean oil spill cleanup efforts. His donation will help purchase equipment such as special suits, masks, gloves, and other items for the 10,000 volunteers that are working hard to cleanup the oil spill. According to Bae Yong Joon's agency BOF, while in the hospital Bae Yong Joon heard about the oil spill. Shortly after his discharge from the hospital he decided to open up the checkbook. If you didn't know already, he was in the hospital due to some injuries suffered from martial arts stunts while filming for MBC's drama The Legend. He currently has a cast around his leg and is awaiting decisions from doctors on whether or not to undergo surgery. Despite his condition, Bae Yong Joon researched the situation of the oil spill and felt very saddened by the whole situation. Instead of a cash donation, he decided to purchase equipment instead - you don't really know where some of the money might be diverted (ie: scandals with officials pocketing money on donations). Considering, Bae Yong Joon's average salary per film is approximately $10,000,000 dollars US... $300,000 doesn't sound like much, but it's a lot more than what other people are donating. Hopefully, this will help speed up the efforts of the clean up process.
