On August 28 KST, the Seoul Central District Court sentenced the first of four perpetrators involved in the 'Seoul National University Deepfake Chatroom' case to 5-years in prison.
Park (29), along with three other accomplices, was previously accused of producing over 400 deepfake videos between July 2020 and April of this year and of distributing 1,735 deepfake videos in Telegram chatrooms. Investigators found that 61 female students and alumni from Seoul National University were targeted and victimized. Park's primary accomplices, including Park (39) and Kang (31), were also found to be Seoul National University graduates.
Based on investigative evidence, the perpetrators initially met in Telegram chatrooms with titles like "Seoul National University Students" and "Humiliation". They then used AI-driven deepfake technology to merge photos of Seoul National University students and alumni taken from graduation yearbooks, SNS, etc onto nude bodies.
Park (29), who is not a graduate of Seoul National University, was also accused of illegally filming female victims on 12 occasions, and of possessing illegal child and adolescent pornography.
The Seoul Central District Court called the crimes committed by Park and his accomplices "humiliating and disgusting," sentencing Park to 5-years in prison, along with 40 hours of sexual violence treatment programs.
Three other accomplices in this case, including the main perpetrators Park (29) and Kang (31) as well as another Seoul National University graduate, Han, are currently on trial for gathering photos of victims, producing deepfake pornography, distributing the videos, and further harassing victims with obscene messages.
