T.O.P (real name Choi Seung Hyun) faced an awkward moment after his face was blurred out during a TV broadcast. The January 7 episode of MBC’s 'Live This Morning' featured a segment discussing the achievements and controversies surrounding Netflix’s 'Squid Game' Season 2.
While the show highlighted the impressive records set by the series, it also addressed the ongoing domestic controversies. The MBC show talked about how the backlash over T.O.P’s casting has now shifted into criticism of his acting, while lead actor Park Sung Hoon also found himself at the center of controversy after posting a porn parody poster of 'Squid Game' on social media.
During the broadcast, key scenes from 'Squid Game' Season 2 were shown, featuring actors Lee Jung Jae, Im Si Wan, and Park Sung Hoon. However, T.O.P., who plays the character "Thanos," was noticeably censored with a blurred effect.
The censorship could be due to T.O.P.’s previous drug-related charges. In 2017, he was sentenced to 10 months in prison, suspended for two years, for marijuana use. Following the incident, he withdrew from the entertainment industry.
Although there are no explicit legal regulations mandating the blurring of convicted celebrities' faces on major terrestrial broadcast networks, there are internal policies in networks such as KBS, MBC, and SBS that often implement the censoring of celebrities involved in legal controversies.
