Amid the controversy over indoor smoking, actor Ji Chang Wook has issued an apology, sparking a recall of past indoor smoking controversies involving celebrities.
Ji Chang Wook was recently embroiled in controversy when a making video for JTBC's 'Welcome to Samdali' showed him smoking indoors. In the video, Ji Chang Wook is seen rehearsing in a room with actors Shin Hye-sun, Lee Jae-won, Bae Myung-jin, and the production team.
While it's not shown him smoking directly, the sight of him apparently holding an e-cigarette in a gathering drew criticism from netizens for being inconsiderate.
Following the backlash, JTBC removed the video, but the controversy did not subside, leading to an apology from Ji Chang Wook's side. His agency, Glorious Entertainment, stated,
"We apologize to everyone who felt uncomfortable with the behavior of actor Ji Chang Wook in the drama making content released on January 26. Actor Ji Chang-wook acknowledges his inappropriate behavior and is sorry for disappointing many. We once again deeply apologize to those who encountered the content, the staff on site, the cast members, and viewers who love the work."
Celebrity indoor smoking controversies resurface from time to time. EXO's D.O. was also caught smoking in an MBC waiting room last August. A netizen filed a complaint about D.O.'s indoor smoking with the Mapo District Health Center, which resulted in a fine for D.O.
NCT's Haechan was embroiled in controversy last month when a dance practice behind-the-scenes video released through an official channel captured him smoking an e-cigarette indoors. SM Entertainment apologized, stating, "We confirmed that Haechan used an e-cigarette indoors in the NCT 127 dance practice content. We plan to pay the fine imposed by the health authorities today."
The spread of Ji Chang Wook's controversy has led to the re-examination of a video showing director Jang Hang-jun smoking indoors. In 'You Were a Director,' released last October, Jang Hang-jun was shown smoking indoors in front of colleagues like director Lee Ok-seop and Jang Do-yeon. This scene was quietly edited out, further disappointing netizens.
While smoking in a no-smoking zone is illegal, netizens are frowning upon the act of smoking without consideration in the presence of colleagues and staff. The lack of consideration for staff is broadly criticized as an act of 'power abuse', even as celebrities apologize for their actions.
(Rabid fans of the first actor trying to argue otherwise, downvoting comments who criticize him, and making a fool of themselves by being in denial about what he did in previous articles does not change any of the facts stated above.)
