BTS has already proven their influence in industries apart from music, such as art, fashion, and tourism. However, it seems their reach has also made its way to the tech industry.
In an interview with KDramaBuzz, identical twin software developers Shonda and Shalisha Witherspoon, proud members of the BTS ARMY, shared how they were inspired by BTS to design a patent that could impact the K-Pop industry in a major way. The invention: a lyric-translating application that retains the cultural nuances often lost in current translation services, as well as in emphasis on preserving musicality, such as rhyming schemes, timing, and syllable count. The first-time inventors also added a novelty of having the song sung back in the vocals of the original artists to boot.
So just what specific BTS song inspired the twins’ patent-pending disclosure? It turns out “Baepsae” a song from their fourth EP “The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Pt. 2” that is difficult to translate due to the intent behind the Korean expression compared with the literal translation, caused the twins to ponder an autonomous way to get fan-translated quality lyrics without waiting for a fan to upload. Now the result is an invention that the twins hope will inspire ARMY and other K-pop fans to follow their dreams and “see that they too can do whatever they aspire to do, as well as show the world that ARMY are more than the erratic screaming fangirls portrayed by the media, but talented individuals who can be leaders in innovation.”
Although more research and development are needed before ARMY can use the application service themselves, it is amazing to see the impact that BTS has in industries that may seem surprising to some, but actually makes sense upon review. After all, if BTS can shape the game industry, web toons, and social media, why not tech?
