BTS is ‘bigger than music’: Steve Aoki praises band for inspiring ‘Asian kids around the world’
Steve Aoki is proud to watch his contemporaries BTS rise through the ranks of the music industry, but to the EDM producer, the boy band is much bigger than music.
The DJ worked with the seven piece – made up of RM, Suga, V, Jungkook, Jimin, Jin and J-Hope – on Mic Drop in 2017 and 2018’s Waste It On Me.
In between those two songs, it’s safe to say BTS has well and truly achieved world domination (and continues to do so after recently scooping five Japan Golden Disc Awards) and Steve couldn’t be happier to ride the journey with them.
‘That’s the best part, to root for your boys and then you see them dominate globally,’ he told Metro.co.uk at the recent Brit Awards, as he continued his latest UK tour.
‘Then you realise they’re bigger than music. It’s cultural; something really powerful for Asian people around the world.’
Getting deep with us about the real impact BTS has on everyone, but especially its Asian Armys, he didn’t shy away from the change they can achieve through their work.
‘All these Asian kids look up to them and now they have this feeling they can have an impact,’ he continued. ‘I see them as something much larger than just the songs they make. I’m excited and honoured to be able to work with them.’
Not just working with BTS these days, though, Steve also recently teamed up with Monsta X on the song Play It Cool, from their latest album.
Telling us found it ‘incredible’ to work with them as he prepared to do his own version of the song for us.
‘Recording the track was incredible because I got to work with such talented artists. Their voices and melodies and vocal performance on the track is amazing.’
He added: ‘I got to work with professionals who really know how to sing the song the way it’s supposed to be sung. I really wanted this song to touch people’s hearts and minds.
‘It’s important that the performance really dives into someone’s soul. And Monsta X knew how to do that.’
