The incident occurred in the city of Suwon at a crosswalk near the Suwon City Hall Station. While the woman was walking across the street, she suddenly fell through a manhole that had been covered by iron plates. The woman has been taken to a hospital since and is reported to have suffered a wound to her backside. Netizens have commented that it is a relief that she wasn't injured anymore severely, as the accident could have endangered her life.
The manhole was made in order for construction workers to access an underground utility tunnel, a passageway meant to make repairing gas pipes easier. Although it had been covered with three iron plates at the time of the incident, it is suspected that the middle cover was not properly fixed over the hole, and thus gave way when the woman walked upon it. Currently the fire department and construction company are investigating into the exact cause of the accident.
Netizens have responded to the news by tagging their friends and warning them to be careful in the city of Suwon, while one top comment writes to the victim of the unfortunate accident as well as the government, "Request compensation from the company that made the manhole cover and then make a special law for manhole cover maintenance."
