Apologies for the delayed review, I was busy stuffing my face with food and then recovering from a food coma afterwards (thanks to Thanksgiving). While rolling around on my stuffed tummy, I did watch 'Pinocchio' episode five and six and unsurprisingly I was pretty entertained for my Thanksgiving.
Before we get into the fluff, let's talk about the darker side of these two episodes, governed by the two brothers Dal Po and Ji Myeong. I like that Dal Po's progress in the news world is often paralleled to his brother's progress into very-bad-decisions territory. We have many moments, particularly in episode five, where the drama cuts the brothers' scenes back to back so we can clearly see how they both are dealing with the official loss of their father differently. While Dal Po is determined to tell his father's unjust story to the world, Ji Myeong is out for cold-blooded revenge.
It's a sad parallel, and it makes you think of what could have been. Dal Po and Ji Myeong are evidently kind souls deep down, from Dal Po taking on the blame for an elderly stranger who crashed into a truck, to Ji Myeong forgiving said stranger for damaging the bumper of that said truck. But while Dal Po was fortunate enough to grow up with a loving, adoptive family, and also knows about his older brother being alive, Ji Myung thinks he's completely alone in this cruel world--and loneliness can sometimes make you go insane. As a result, while Dal Po found a healthier way to find closure, Ji Myung is finding his via murder, and we know that's not gonna end well.
The drama continues to have its quirky moments executed by its quirky cast of characters. In Ha continues to be adorable as she struggles with her job hunt and her feelings for Dal Po. It's also fun seeing Bum Jo's bewilderment at the tough news world and Yoo Rae's constant attempt not to cry at her job. They're all miserable, but there's something endearing about how hard they're working, fumbling, and failing as young adults in their early-20s trying to figure things out.
Speaking of the news world, I love that we got to see way more of it, especially in episode six! It was interesting seeing our characters out in the field, clamoring for a story and working with their demanding bosses. The competition between YGN and MSC is exciting and makes me more eager for the next 'Pinocchio' episode than I've ever been. I'm personally rooting for In Ha to win this news battle round for MSC. I want her to prove to both her mom and Dal Po that she's capable of being a reporter, and that her Pinocchio syndrome is her strength rather than her weakness. I trust her to do her best to tell the most honest story. Anyone else with me? Go In Ha, go!
Highlights:
Episode 5
Girl, you're telling him you're not angry with him after what he did? He told everyone that you have Pinocchio syndrome! Even if he was freaking out about his dad, that's kind of a low blow.
Looks like Dal Po continues to associate In Ha with her mom in his mind.
Awwww, girl. I get that feel.
In Ha thinks of the best idea for revenge ever.
... And fails to execute it because she's too nice. Guess you're not getting toilet water in your mouth after all Dal Po.
Sad but true. If the information isn't interesting, the news won't cover it for you.
Haha good point Bum Jo.
AWWWWWW, BABY NOOOOOOOOO. :(
Hey Bum Jo, in case you were wondering when the right time would be to give sad puppy In Ha your birthday gift, I was thinking NOW'S A GOOD TIME. Cheer up the birthday girl, c'mon!
Omo.
OMO.
Awwww.... Well that kind of makes sense. It'd be awkward for the rest of the family (aka grandpa and Dal Pyeong) if they were to become an item.
Dal Po pretends that real-life intestines don't faze him.
And then this happens. Poor Dal Po.
But at least he has a family that cares enough to all buy him medicine. Awwwwwww.
"Maybe I should stop being such a mean jerk to In Ha my caring niece and friend," he thinks to himself.
Voila, the awkwardness is gone! Too bad they're gonna encounter Dal Pyeong's stank soon.
This moment was such a tease. Just when you thought Dal Po and Ji Myeong were going to meet, they don't.
Is it really a good idea to tell a higher-up your plans? What if he tries to stop you? He probably can considering his position.
Ji Myeong's revenge: to have his father's wrongdoers die like his father did.
Oh God, what did he do to those people?!
Episode 6
From the very start, the news world does not look fun.
This guy is fun though. Looks like he's gonna give his underlings a whole lotta hell.
This one too. Although aggressively biting your pen like that is kind of weird.
The moment In Ha finally makes Dal Po realize that she didn't get into the news world because of her mom, but because of him. AKA, In Ha is not her mom, Dal Po!
Awww, looks like mommy Cha Ok cares after all, at least enough to give advice to her ex-husband on how to not let their small family fall apart.
Meanwhile, this mom is being weird.
This dad is being awesome.
And this poor boy got robbed by his adoptive father.
*Hiccup*.
Haha, so cute.
It's almost as if they've never seen a messy college dorm before.
And then this happens. Okay girl, that is disgusting and unsanitary.
Meanwhile, Beom Jo is going crazy.
Awwwww snap. That close proximity.
And Bum Jo calls him out on it. I guess if I saw an uncle caressing his sleeping niece, I'd be weirded out too.
Ahn Chan Soo makes his comeback! Awww, I'm glad he can talk to both Dal Po and In Ha so comfortably even after all that's happened in high school.
Using a stethoscope to eavesdrop? ... Does that actually work?
LOL. Am I the only one who loves how this guy shouts? Probably would not be the case if I was on the receiving end though.
Wait, what? Dal Po-yah, is that even legal?
Okay, let's be real. A phone recording of a CCTV clip can't be that good quality.
Who's going to win in the news race next week? My vote goes to In Ha.
