[Spoilers!] Reply 1994 Ep. 3: Five Messages down memory lane

Reply 1994 is set in a time of a digital transition. Cell phones weren't heavily used, if you think the Samsung Galaxy Note series is big, you haven't seen the Zack Morris phone. There wasn't text messaging or MMS but pagers and beepers were becoming popular. The forms and ways of how we communicated was changing.

I remember the days of answering machines and voicemail. The awkwardness of trying to remember what you were going to say while you wait for the machine to stop talking to you. That moment just after you hang up, when you realize that you've forgotten to leave your name in your message. The panic of being at a pay phone and not having enough change left to make your call.

I don't get many voicemails these days- most people just text me if I miss a call. Watching episode three of 'Reply 1994' gave me some past nostalgia... accompany me on my trip down memory lane as I look at five messages people recorded in this episode...

5. Trash's answering machine song

I was pretty young back in 1994, but I'm old enough to remember when recording from a tape deck was the only way to get a song on your phone or answering machine. Watching Na Jung (Go Ara) and Trash (Jung Woo) struggle to get the song on his pager at the right moment definitely brought back memories. I love how chill Trash is with everything Na Jung throws at him. He has no problem with her outsmarting him and handles her freak outs with more patience than I will ever have.

4. Na Jung's message for Trash

Na Jung may be a college student, but she's a kid at heart. She has a crush and she wants to test Trash and see if she's the most important to him, so she leaves him a message saying she's sick and he should come take care of her right away. Of course, technology-deficient Trash completely forgets he even has a pager and never checks it- whoops. Na Jung is furious, but she doesn't stay mad for too long.

3. Chilbong's mom's message for Chilbong

Episode three gave us more of an introduction to Bingeure (B1A4's Baro) and Chilbong (Yoo Yun Suk)'s backgrounds than we've had so far. The two guys are on their way to Chilbong's mother's second wedding, and they explain to Mr. and Mrs. Sung that she's a very important art professor who is too busy with work to be a mother. This is the total opposite of Na Jung's family, who are all in each other's business all the time.

When Chilbong calls his mom to apologize for missing her wedding, he's sure she didn't even notice he wasn't there. As it turns out, she left a long, thoughtful message for him about how sorry she is and how much she loves him. Sure, one message can't make up for a lifetime of not being there, but it's a start.

2. Chilbong's message for his mom

Then, Chilbong goes and leaves a long, rambling message in return, apologizing for being mean three days ago. He wishes her well in the midst of going on and on about how he really wants some of the kimchi she makes so well and asking her to make some as soon as she's back. Maybe there's hope for this mother and son yet.

1. Trash's message from his ex-girlfriend

Of course, the only message that matters to our Na Jung is the one she eavesdrops on. Trash's girlfriend calls and throws a fit over the way she and Trash broke up- so oppa's single again?. Na Jung doesn't even bother to feel sorry for Trash- she just bounces around on her bed in glee that she might have a chance with him.

I think I've pinpointed what's not sitting right about Na Jung with me. In 'Reply 1997', it took Shi Won (A Pink's Eunji) a long time to start liking Yoon Jae (Seo In Guk), so the writers had to give her other interests. Yeah, she had H.O.T and Tony, but she also wanted to be fanclub president and she had her fanfiction and she was trying to get into college- she was always working towards something other than liking Yoon Jae.

With Na Jung, she's always either chasing Sang Min (the basketball player she likes) or Trash, and doesn't seem to have many other interests or goals. She's already in college, she's already picked a major... other than her cleaning habits and her bad back, she doesn't seem to have a whole lot else going on in her life. I'd love to get to know Na Jung's character better, but that means she's going to have to have some goals that don't have to do with the boys she's chasing. Here's hoping we get to see that soon.

So, if you could leave a message for anyone on 'Reply 1994', who would it be and what would you tell them? Check out episode three on Drama Fever and let us know what you think in the comments!
