The 2011 SBS Gayo Daejun was an event that verified the great popularity of idol stars. However, a TV Daily report argues that this event was only an idol star party. There wasn't much of a variety of music genres and it did not show a harmony of seniors and juniors in the music industry. The 2011 SBS Gayo Daejun was held at the Kintex in Ilsan and was hosted by Girls' Generation's YoonA, Lee Seung Gi, and Song Ji Hyo. Popular idol stars including Super Junior, Girls' Generation, TVXQ, 2PM, Wonder Girls, miss A, 2NE1, KARA, B2ST, 4minute, SISTAR, T-ARA, Brown Eyed Girls, After School, and more appeared on the show. The most eye-catching aspect of the show were the collaboration stages of the rival girl group members. SISTAR's Hyorin, Brown Eyed Girls' Ga-In, T-ARA's Jiyeon, 4minute's HyunA, and miss A's Fei gave a special sexy dance performance to Beyonce's "Run the World". As the performance was put on by members of differnet groups, it gave the aura of a dance battle. However, maybe it was due to their high rival mindset, their dance skills were high but the performance left a feeling of unsatisfaction. Overall, the stage was filled with idol groups' flashy performances. Groups wrapped up the year singing their hit songs of 2011. They also put on many special performances to other songs. In particular, in the 2nd half of the show, the Queens of K-pop drew much attention with the relay performances by the Wonder Girls, Girls' Generation, KARA, and 2NE1. It was a self-appraisal of their success overseas, throughout Asia, Europe and the US. However, the Gayo Daejun stage was solely an idol party. It was hard to find other musicians besides idol stars. The first half of the show featured a special hip hop stage with Yoon Mi Rae, Leessang's Gary, and Dynamic Duo, but it was evident that the performance had been forcefully pushed together. Many were unsatisfied since active ballad singers of 2011 such as Kim Dong Ryul, Sung Shi Kyung, and Jung Yup were nowhere to be found. Since it was an idol-infested show, the 200 minutes seemed to be filled with similar performances. Due to the strong dance performances, singers were unable to show off their vocal abilities. About 20 groups gave flashy performances of a similar format making the second half appear to be nothing more than a talent show. At the same time, KBS held their 2011 KBS Trot Festival, emphasizing the generation split in today's Korean music industry. Idol groups have made a large contribution to the Korean music industry through K-pop's Hallyu effect. Seeing that more than 90% of the stars on the show were idol groups, the only way into the Korean music industry seems to be through idol stardom. The 2011 SBS Gayo Daejun was the first music festival of this year's end; however, the remaining music festivals of other broadcasting stations is expected to have a similar nature. The reporter argues that there needs to be a music festival which has a better incorporation of seniors and juniors in the Korean music industry. What do you think of the show?
