K-netizens were appalled by a segment on the Coupang Play comedy series 'SNL Korea 4', which has been garnering attention recently as a YouTube short.
The segment featured the appearance of a "rookie reporter from Vietnam, Aung Wei", on a fictional news broadcast. Portrayed by an 'SNL Korea' actress, the character proceeded to portray a "Vietnamese woman speaking Korean with a foreign accent", beginning with a confident introduction which she ends with an innocent and childlike smile. A studio reporter then reacts by commenting, "She is just the cutest thing. So cute!"
For members on one online community, the overtly "racist" and "xenophobic" portrayal of the female character prompted harsh criticism, as many commented,
"This is so ridiculous and backward, I don't know what to say."
"Is this clip from 2003..?"
"Why is it that comedy programs don't know how to make content these days without demeaning someone? No wonder all the comedy programs are being cancelled."
"This season's entire theme is making fun of minorities..."
"The fact that not a single member of the staff thought to speak up and prevent this from airing makes me so embarrassed."
"At this point, with all the issues that this show has had, it should just be cancelled."
"Making a young foreign girl look naive and childish.. even as a Korean I feel offended."
"This is our society right now.. the fact that the number of people who actually see this as problematic are still few!"
"No matter how you look at it, this is just direct racism."
"Society is literally regressing. I can't believe this is still happening in 2023."
Meanwhile, the fourth season of Coupang Play's 'SNL Korea' wrapped up earlier this month on September 16, with its final host Daniel Henney.
All this cancel culture is just getting stupid.
Can comedians no longer make fun of anything without people being offended?
