The early presidential election clock is ticking fast, after the recent official impeachment of former President Yoon Suk Yeol. With his presidential term having been cut short by 2 years, a new presidential election must be held within the next 60 days in order to appoint his successor.
Acting President Han Duck Soo is now responsible for announcing the date of the next election within the next 10 days, as special presidential elections must be announced no less than 50 days before they are set to take place.
Though Acting President Han is expected to confirm the official date of the election at next week's State Council meeting, internal sources have reported that the date of the presidential election will be set for June 3. This falls at the end of the '60 days limit', which sources say is designed to give citizens enough time to make an informed decision and to "honor the people's right to vote as much as possible."
Acting President Han also stated his promise: "I will do my best to manage the next presidential election so that the next government can be launched without a hitch in accordance with the Constitution and the law."
The selected date of June 3 is expected to have other consequences as well, since the Korea Institute of Curriculum and Evaluation has scheduled the official mock college entrance exam for that date. However, officials stated that "The mock college entrance exam schedule will not be a variable in determining the presidential election date," and that "We are also discussing this matter with the National Election Commission."
After taking all potential situations into account, Acting President Han is expected to hold a cabinet meeting next Tuesday and announce the official presidential election date.
