According to South Korean government sources, Kim Jong Nam was assassinated by two female North Korean spies who stuck a poisoned needle in his body at the airport in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Kim Jong Nam is reported to have died right on the spot. The spies reportedly fled the scene immediately in a taxi while Malaysian police chased after them.

Currently, the details on the death of Kim Jong Nam is under investigation. The assassination of Kim Jong Nam is not yet officially confirmed according to the official statements by South Korea's National Intelligence Service and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The reason behind his assassination is also unknown.
At the time of his reported death, Kim Jong Nam did not hold any official government position in North Korea.
