F.T. Island member Minhwan has found himself embroiled in a prostitution scandal, sparking commentary from an attorney.
On October 30, lawyer Lee Go Eun appeared on YTN News FM’s 'Wise Radio Life' to discuss Minhwan, who recently faced accusations of soliciting prostitution at adult establishments.
Attorney Lee commented on the audio recording shared by Yulhee, Minhwan’s ex-wife, stating, "Rather than simply booking a woman or a particular establishment, Minhwan requested help reserving a place to stay, mentioning motels and hotels specifically." Lee questioned Minhwan's decision, saying, "Is it morally acceptable to request such a reservation, especially when he was advised to spend time with his family?"
Attorney Lee Go Eun explained that hiring hostesses is legal for certain entertainment establishments, commonly referred to as "karaoke bars (room salons)," and does not constitute prostitution. However, the lawyer noted that “prostitution would involve a sexual transaction, particularly when there is an exchange of money for sexual acts, often taking place in accommodations. This serves as a circumstantial piece of evidence."
Lee Go Eun also expressed strong suspicions of prostitution, noting that the money discussed in Minhwan's alleged messages was significant, far exceeding trivial sums like 100,000 to 200,000 KRW (~73 USD to 146 USD). The lawyer added, "The term 'TC' in this context refers to the hourly fee for a hostess to pour drinks," clarifying that the amount mentioned exceeded 2 million KRW (~1,456 USD). Despite these concerns, Lee stated that the recordings alone are insufficient to confirm prostitution.
The lawyer further explained that for Minhwan to be prosecuted on prostitution charges, direct evidence is required, stating, "If there were an attempt crime provision, merely going to a hotel could be grounds for attempted solicitation charges. However, no such provision exists, and testimony alone is insufficient."
Attorney Lee remarked, “Listening to the audio, I got the impression that Minhwan is quite familiar with the nightlife culture, given the expressions he used and how he discussed certain establishments and women. Such ease in conversation typically comes from frequent experiences.” Lee predicted that even if this were Minhwan's first offense, he would likely face more than just a suspended indictment, possibly a fine or harsher penalty.
Minhwan and Yulhee married in 2018 and have one son and two daughters. They announced their divorce in December last year, with custody awarded to Minhwan. Recently, Yulhee disclosed details of their divorce on her YouTube channel, alleging that Minhwan had conversations with nightlife establishment staff, requesting to “call girls” and “reserve a hotel.” She shared that discovering Minhwan’s visits to such establishments left her shocked and pieced together many unsettling incidents from their past.
Following these revelations, Minhwan exited the KBS 2TV variety show 'The Return of Superman' and has since paused all activities. F.T. Island is continuing as a duo, with Minhwan’s drum position temporarily filled by a session musician.
