2. Play
3. Cold Winter (feat. Mad Clown)
4. The Killa
5. Blue Nostalgia
YUJU makes her debut as a soloist on her latest and first mini-album, REC. This idol has taken it upon herself to reinvent her artistic image and change her sound to reflect a new side to YUJU. REC. features five songs and a feature from Mad Clown. Though the release is a short, but sweet mini-album, it's jam-packed with goodies for Buddies to enjoy.
Opening with the sassy and imposing "Bad Blood (Intro)," YUJU has a somewhat dark and slightly sinister delivery that makes her rebrand unique. Truly, the worst part of "Bad Blood" is that it isn't long enough. I would have loved to hear the song in a full 3-minute take, but I'll settle for what I can get! YUJU's title track, "Play," is next on the tracklist. The song speaks on moving on after heartbreak and is filled with YUJU's newfound signature flavor. Sultry and demure, this title is a hit, though its tempo is slightly on the mellow side.
Mad Clown lends his vocals to YUJU on "Cold Winter." Opting for an easy-listening concept that's not quite a ballad, YUJU, and Mad Clown's rap style mesh and intertwine perfectly to create a romantic duet that's complimentary in nature. "The Killa" is much more upbeat and groovy but still retains that easy-going feel. Those who doubted GFriend's abilities to shine individually might have a hard pill to swallow. YUJU shines as a soloist, and "The Killa" is a testament to that. Funky and smooth, "The Killa" is my must-listen recommendation to you.
Acoustic, "Blue Nostalgia" closes out the release with a heartfelt and unplugged performance. The gentle feel of this song lulls you into a sense of comfort that captivates you. Sweet vocals and emotion-laden lyricism close out YUJU's triumphant debut.
MV REVIEW
Monochromatic themes run rampant in YUJU's MV for "Play." Netizens have buzzed worldwide about YUJU's incredible visuals in this MV and debut in general, and it's clear to see why! YUJU is stunning in a variety of ensembles that fit monochromatically into the scenes and sets. Strong reds and vibrant blues shine against her dramatic and ethereal performance energy. Her video boasts strong performance, visual aesthetics, and eye-catching choreography. Captivating!
