Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon met with visiting Vietnamese Minister of Public Security Tô Lâm on Monday to apologize for the assault of a Vietnamese woman by her Korean husband.
A viral video clip of the June 4 assault, secretly filmed by the wife, shows the husband beating her violently while their two-year-old son weeps.
"We will make our utmost efforts to protect the human rights of Vietnamese nationals living in Korea," Lee told Lâm.
Lâm said "What happened is regrettable, but I thank the Korean government for handling the situation well."
The husband (36) reportedly flew into a rage because his wife's Korean was not good enough. The 30-year-old woman sustained injuries requiring four weeks of treatment.
He has since been arrested.
Minister of Gender Equality and Family Jin Sun-mee visited the woman in hospital in Mokpo, South Jeolla Province and promised support for her treatment and recovery.
The victim and her son will also be given counselling, free legal service and a nanny. "We will open additional counselling centers for migrant women who are victims of domestic violence across the country," Jin said.
This is the type of thing that should be done always. Immediate action. Knowing right from wrong. I’m glad they are doing this. It feels like a win and I’m not even Vietnamese, but as a woman. Although it would be nice if they put efforts to protect women as a whole and not as a nationality, I know the world is far too incompetent for that right now. Let’s all be thankful they’re taking action in this way! It’s a big step.
( I am sorry if I use nationality//ethnicity wrong. I’m researching the best word for what I mean now lol.)
