On September 14, the cast members of upcoming Lifetime reality show 'Pajama Friends' including Red Velvet's Joy, Song Ji Hyo, and Jang Yoon Joo attended the show's premiere press conference. Cosmic Girls's Cheng Xiao was unable to attend the conference due to other schedules.
During this press conference, Joy was asked about her second ever fixed cast member appearance on a variety show after JTBC's 'Sugarman 2'. During 'Sugarman', Joy received hate for her lifeless expressions, inexperience in MC-ing, and more. The idol star opened up with, "I did have some fear in taking on a new variety program. In the past, I appeared on another reality program 'We Got Married', but whatever I did during that time, I never got the kind of negative feedback then that I do now. It was very comfortable back then. I was 20 years old, so everyone viewed me as cute and endearing. But then more and more instances of me receiving negative criticism occurred, and even around me, people would say, 'Why is she acting like that'. I never meant any ill-intent, but my actions caused misunderstandings, so I started being afraid to show my real self. I kept wanting to show an image that everyone would like, and I also developed a fear of reality programs."
She further revealed, "I look through all the comments regarding my negative behavior. In the past, I would just overcome it by crying because I didn't know any better, but now I do try to overlook it some. Because I am a part of a team and not a solo act, I hate the idea of inflicting harm on my members so I end up thinking about my actions very carefully, and I end up showing a controlled image."
Regarding 'Sugarman', Joy elaborated, "I was too pressured during 'Sugarman' because I was working with such high sunbaes, and that ended up being my poison... Due to the criticism I received from variety shows, I grew to be more introverted. I would just shut myself in. I was afraid about this program as well. I hated the thought of others feeling uncomfortable because of me. When I first meet people, I'm not talkative, but that's because I hold back a lot of my thoughts. If I felt more comfortable, I would say my thoughts out loud. While filming 'Pajama Friends', the unnies were older and had more life experiences than me so they gave me so much advice, making things a lot more comfortable for me."
Meanwhile, 'Pajama Friends' premieres on Lifetime this September 15 at 11 PM KST.
