The Korea Management Federation has spoken up regarding ongoing music chart controversies.
After recent cases of "music chart manipulation" or "sajaegi" accusations against artists such as Nilo and Shaun arose, netizens and even music industry veterans have been demanding reforms from Korea's current music chart systems.
On July 20, the vice president of the Korea Management Federation told media outlets, "Back when the Nilo case occurred, we immediately requested investigations from the parties involved and even filed for an investigation from the Fair Trade Commission; however, no one stepped up to actively resolve the issue. As a result, we've created a situation where whenever someone unknown shoots up to 1st place on the charts, sajaegi accusations come first. Such patterns cause damages not only to the singers who sing these songs, but also to consumers who purchase music through music charts and platforms. Music industry experts must come together to actively discuss this issue in order to properly resolve the controversies."
The vice president continued, "We will hold a meeting in coordination with the culture department as soon as possible, so that music industry experts can gather for discussion. We must build a foundation so that the industry can operate normally without causing any more issues, and without disappointing the fans who love popular music. In order for popular music to progress, it must input effort from the inside so that it can grow with fans' love."
