SECRET may not have the most thought-provoking music, but that's never stopped them from landing in the top 10 since their first physical single, "Magic". So what is their secret? Although concept changes are almost as common as girl group debuts in K-pop, SECRET's ability to naturally go from a girl-next-door image to a sexy, powerful stage is unrivaled among their scantily clad peers. SECRET's new single "YooHoo" brings us another costume change for the girls that takes us back to their cheery "Shy Boy" era but with a spring inspired flare. A likely move after releasing their dark, confrontational mid-tempo ballad, "Talk That" several months ago.
[caption id="attachment_684732" align="alignleft" width="250" caption="Summery Fun"][/caption]"YooHoo", much like the rest of SECRET's discography, relies on fast paced rhythms and a repetitive, easy to follow catch phrase, which in this case is obviously "YooHoo". Based on the lyrics, "YooHoo" is SECRET's way of grabbing the attention of some guy who has them feeling discouraged and friend-zoned. While the lyrics are bright and exciting, the instrumental is merely appropriate.
Had long-time collaborating producer Kang Ji-won strayed from the secret formula by just a few degrees this time around, "YooHoo" might have turned out a bit more interesting. But on a positive note, SECRET's "YooHoo" brushes off those negative vibes from "Talk That" and introduces to us once again the fun SECRET we were more accustomed to.
Perhaps going back to basics was the best decision for the four ladies this time around. This year so far has been full of girl group bubblegum K-Pop leggo swag, which is all awesome-- until everyone including gag comedians are doing it too. Aside from all the over analyzing mumbo-jumbo, SECRET going back to their roots and doing good old classic SECRET is actually really refreshing, and their music video surely adds to the effect.
