YG Entertainment founder and CEO Yang Hyun Suk recently sat down for an interview and revealed thoughts on his success and sources of motivation.
When asked, "Do you feel like you've succeeded?", Yang Hyun Suk replied, "Ah, I've always lived thinking that I've succeeded. Even when I was a dancer. Because I was born into a not so fortunate family but became recognized as the best dancer, so I think that counts as being successful. Even when Keep Six (first YG Entertainment group to debut) didn't do so well, I didn't think of it as a failure. I was young and passionate. People would look at me and tell me that I'm a scary person. Because I am a person who needs nothing, a person who has done nothing wrong. The reason that the artists in my label are scared of me isn't because I scold them."
To the question, "Are you happy at this moment?", the YG Entertainment CEO responded, "Yes. Not because I became a multi-millionaire through YG Entertainment, but because I can give happiness to others. I am at the center of the business that makes people laugh and dance with my music when they don't have any reason to in their life. My goal is not to raise the company stock price. Releasing as many talented rookies and songs as possible is really important. Although it is a tough and difficult process, I do it because it's fun."
When asked, "What is the energy that keeps your heart beating?", Yang Hyun Suk revealed, "I thought about that a lot and it's probably my father. My father worked with electricity and he's never stopped his hands from working for even a single day. He is turning 76 years old this year, but he still works with his hands at a Buddhist supplies shop. No matter how much I try to stop him, he says that working is what makes him happy. I think there is no greater happiness than working somewhere where you're needed."
