I never thought I'd see the day that the Brown Eyed Girls would be sharing the same stage as T-Pain and Bruno Mars, but it happened on Saturday night at San Francisco's MYX Mash! I'm one of those people that tends to arrive late to everything, so I was pretty excited to get to the Bill Graham Auditorium nearly three hours before the start of the concert, guessing that the venue would be nearly empty when I arrived. Turns out I was dead wrong - even in the early afternoon, a line of excited attendees had already begun queuing up along the block and around the corner.�Long before the doors were open, the ladies at the front of the line were telling me that they had been in line for over five hours, which was quite a feat in the freezing, windy weather of San Francisco. The Bill Graham Auditorium�has bragged top tier artists in the past, including Lady Gaga and Muse, yet it seemed like MYX Mash wouldn't have any problem doing the venue justice with a full crowd. With guest performances from America's Best Dance Crew season 5 champions Poreotix & more plus VIP guests like speed skater (and Olympic bronze medalist) JR Celski, MYX Mash was studded with stars both on and off the stage. The floods of people that streamed through the hallways of the concert auditorium included individuals of all backgrounds, but was decidedly dominated with a young Asian & African-American crowd. Although the hodgepodge of attendees at this event may seem bizarre at first glance, the coupling of Korea & America's top artists really wasn't so random after all. It turns out that many BEG fans were equally excited to see T-Pain (for a cheap price too!), and I actually ran into a few T-Pain fans that were addicted to Abracadabra after looking them up before the show. T-Pain himself mentioned a very deep interest in Asia at the press conference, saying, "I have a huge infatuation of Asian culture ... I like Japanimation [and have] lots of Asian stuff in my house." After a pre-show featuring Poreotix, a fan dance-off and more, Bruno Mars officially kicked things off with a satisfying repertoire stemming from a variety of genres. The multi-faceted talent showed off his skills on the guitar while belting out many favorite tunes, charming girls with�Somewhere in Brooklyn and entertaining the audience with Count on Me on the ukulele. Despite the lack of flashy choreography and dazzling lights, Mars turned out to be a crowd pleaser with his personality, and scored a few points when he switched up the lyrics of�Nothing on You and dedicated it to the "beautiful Asian girls" (check 2:43 below!) of the crowd.�Finally, the singer wrapped things up with an encore performance of Michael Jackson's�Dirty Diana, an old favorite that Bruno had enjoyed covering even before his days of fame. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLlr5hdm-3U http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5BZcssuGPjE By then, the crowd had already begun chanting for the Brown Eyed Girls with a strong, collective repetition of "B-E-G." As anxious eyes eagerly scanned the dark stage for a glimpse of the four hot ladies, ABDC's Poreotix entered instead equipped with big smiles and, as we discovered about twenty seconds later, really wicked dance moves. It's always easy to say that a dance performance is "really good" or "fun to watch," but Poreotix seriously killed the stage with their upbeat performance that was speckled with ABDC judge quotes and practically oozing with talent. The Taylor Swift - Kanye West ending is killer! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XP95x57Zn8w So after the members of Poreotix bowed their way off the stage, it was time for kpop to reign the stage; as the Brown Eyed Girls stepped onto the platform, the eruption of cheers showed that the audience was ready for the ladies as well. Unfortunately, leader Jea hadn't been able to make it due to visa problems, but Ga-in, Narsha and Miryo still got the crowd going crazy just with their presence on the stage. The girls began things with a performance of L.O.V.E, a track that had shot the girls to instant fame back in 2008. To follow up, the Brown Eyed Girls then performed an English cover of You Raise Me Up, which, despite being a bit of a hype killer with its slow beat, definitely showed off the girls' vocal capabilities. The gals then took their seats and sang Moody Night, a laidback yet sexy track released last July on the Sound G album. At this point, Miryo surprised the audience by announcing that they only had one track left to perform. Although many were baffled by the surprisingly short line-up of songs, disappointment turned into enthusiasm as a familiar electronic tune beeped through the speakers as Abracadabra filled the musky air. And I don't think I need to even describe the explosive reaction from the crowd as the Brown Eyed Girls crossed their arms and began their globally viral "saucy hip sway" - they've done it so many times but it never gets old! Earlier that day, the performer promised to put on a show with a "whole lotta sweat and dreads." "I'm just gonna put everything I've got into this show... I might throw up," he warned the press before the show with a laugh, then opened his show with, "I'm not here to throw a concert, I'm here to throw a party!" Luckily, we didn't see any heaving on-stage, but the singer-songwriter did really put it all into that night, feasting on the energy of a fully packed stadium as he performed essentially all of the tracks you hear on the radio and in the clubs these days, from�Kiss Kiss to�Freeze. We heard it all - the crowd got down with Low, T-Pain slowed things down with a keyboard & autotune mic, and can I just say that getting to actually see�I'm On a Boat live is pretty amusing?�Although he became the main act of the night, T-Pain also shed the spotlight on his dancers, who got their own moments of fame and a few choreography-based numbers. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFrrRjJvRe8 So, TL;DR - MYX Mash made for a pretty satisfying night! Although I was disappointed with the brevity of the Brown Eyed Girls' stage, getting the opportunity to meet them along with T-Pain, Bruno Mars, JR Celski, Poreotix and so many other big names all in one evening was pretty incredible. And not gonna lie - just getting to see Abracadabra live was in itself enough to make my night! As MYX's first concert, I'm definitely impressed by the delightful line-up and great venue that the organizers were able to pull together, and we're looking forward to any future concerts that MYX will bring in the future!
