Dubbed as Korea's equivalent of American Idol (although it now seems "American" no more), Superstar K has evidently affected the k-pop industry substantially. After producing a series of hidden stars throughout the country with an amazing record of 8.47% in viewership, it has been reported by Mnet that they have decided to continue the phenomenon by kicking off Superstar K Season 2 in March. Seo In Gook was the glorious winner of the first season, and received a record contract, a chance to perform at 2009 MAMA, along with $100,000 USD (100 million won) in cash. He has made his official debut as a singer with his single, Calling You, and is currently in preparation for his next anticipated album. Superstar K Season 2 is expected to be opened in much grander format, as the monetary prize for the first place winner has been doubled. The champion will also be given the honor to open his/her own special stage at 2010 MAMA, followed by an exclusive record contract. The director, Hong Soo Hyun revealed,
"Superstar K has marked its end after receiving a tremendous amount of spotlight countrywide. The show even successfully produced many skillful stars including Seo In Gook, Gil Hak Mi, Jo Moon Keun, and Park Tae Jin. We wish to rekindle the craze of last year, so please help us by supporting your love."The auditions will officially launch on March 2nd through ARS and Mnet.com, and the remaining participants will then advance to a series of preliminary rounds at eight different cities, until a certain number of finalists get chosen. The final rounds will be aired live starting April.
