Amidst the recent arrest of President Yoon Suk Yeol on charges of insurrection, singer IU is facing a wave of online harassment.
On January 16, various comments flooded IU’s social media platforms, including derogatory remarks such as "The nation's little sister stabbed us in the back," "Leftist IU," and "Does this make you feel better?" These comments are believed to be from far-right users opposed to President Yoon's arrest and impeachment.
IU’s involvement in the controversy began last month when she attended a rally on December 14 that called for President Yoon's impeachment. During the rally, IU had pre-paid for food and beverages at local cafes in the Yeouido area, including 100 pieces of bread, 100 drinks, 100 servings of pork and rice soup, 100 bowls of beef bone soup, and 100 pieces of rice cakes, to support the participants of the protest.
In response to the negative comments, many fans have rallied behind IU, posting supportive messages such as "Don't mind the hate," and "Don't touch IU." Despite the online attacks, the situation continues to gain attention, with many commenting on the matter across social media platforms.
Meanwhile, President Yoon was arrested on the morning of January 15 by the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) and the police. His arrest comes 43 days after the emergency martial law situation of December 3. It has been reported that he exercised his right to remain silent during the investigation.
