Actress Soo Hyun has ended her marriage after five years.
According to a report from Star News on the 23rd, Soo Hyun and her husband, former WeWork executive Matthew Shampine (42, Cha Min Geun), have finalized their divorce. The couple, who married in 2019, have decided to go their separate ways after five years together.
Details regarding the reason for the divorce and child custody arrangements have not been disclosed. Soo Hyun and Cha Min Geun welcomed a daughter in September of the year following their marriage.
Soo Hyun and Cha Min Geun tied the knot on December 14th, 2019, at the Shilla Hotel in Jangchung-dong, Seoul. Their wedding came just four months after publicly announcing their relationship, capturing significant attention due to the union of a prominent entertainment star and a successful young entrepreneur. However, after five years of marriage, they have chosen to part ways and pursue their own paths.
Soo Hyun, who began her career as a model after winning first place in the 2005 Korea-China Supermodel Contest, transitioned into acting the following year with the SBS drama 'Queen of the Game'. Since then, she has appeared in a variety of dramas including 'The Fugitive: Plan B' (2010), 'Romance Town' (2011), 'Brain' (2011), 'Standby' (2012), '7th Grade Civil Servant' (2013), 'Monster' (2016), and 'Chimera' (2021).
Notably, Soo Hyun made her Hollywood debut in 2015, playing a role in the Marvel film 'Avengers: Age of Ultron' thanks to her excellent English-speaking skills and acting ability. She has since continued her international career, appearing in films such as 'The Dark Tower' (2017), 'Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald' (2018), and the Netflix series 'Marco Polo' (2014–2016).
More recently, she left a strong impression playing the final boss, Maeda, in the first season of the Netflix series 'Gyeongseong Creature' (2023–2024). In June, she also appeared in the JTBC drama 'Not a Hero', where she took on a role as Bok Dong Hee, a character who could not fly due to her weight, marking a significant shift in her acting style. Soo Hyun is now preparing for the release of her Korean film debut, 'A Normal Family', set to premiere on October 9th.
Cha Min Geun, who served as WeWork’s Head of Asia Pacific and CEO of WeWork Korea until October 2019, is currently the CEO of DnKorea, a proptech company that operates the real estate platform "Dongnae." He is a Korean-American adoptee raised in a family in New Jersey, USA.
