Actor Wi Ha Joon opened up about behind-the-scenes stories, including how he was cast in the global Netflix hit series 'Squid Game.'
On the June 27 episode of KBS2TV variety show 'Heart on Wheels,' actors Yang Dong Geun, Park Gyu Young, and Wi Ha Joon, who all appear in the Squid Game series, appeared as guests and shared honest conversations while visiting the peaceful island of Daeeijakdo.
During the episode, host Boom brought up Wi Ha Joon being named one of the 25 sexiest men in the world and complimented his well-maintained physique, built through consistent exercise.
Wi Ha Joon shared his fitness routine, saying, “For the first time in a year and a half, I stopped weight training. My arms were too bulky, and it didn’t suit the role.” He added that he now focuses mostly on martial arts and cardio workouts to match his character better.
The conversation also revealed behind-the-scenes stories about their 'Squid Game' auditions. Park Gyu Young said she sent a video directly to the production company and was later called in for an in-person audition.
Wi Ha Joon recalled his casting process for the role of Jun Ho and shared, “I initially visited the production company just to say hello, and it turned out the role of Jun Ho was the only one still unfilled. They heard my voice and asked me to audition.” He continued, “I thought it would be a casual read-through, but the director and producers were all there. I tend to memorize all my lines before auditions, and luckily, that worked in my favor.”
Wi Ha Joon also candidly shared his feelings about the show’s massive global success. “At first, I couldn’t enjoy it at all. I was actually really stressed. I hate the feeling of disappointment, so I try not to have expectations,” he said.
However, he said his mindset had changed by the time of the Season 2 press conference. He said, “I enjoyed the event the most in my entire life. I even blew hand kisses,” explaining how he fully embraced the moment this time around. Park Gyu Young added warmly, “I thought he was always the type to enjoy things. I was actually nervous, but he helped escort me,” sharing a behind-the-scenes moment.
