"Since long ago, I have wanted to nurture talents from various countries based on K-pop methodology and create a global group in the K-pop style with them."
This statement was emphasized by Chairman Bang Si Hyuk when he introduced the 20 candidates for the KATSEYE group last August, marking the beginning of the official audition process. In Netflix's documentary series 'Pop Star Academy: KATSEYE', his vision of achieving global K-pop expansion by applying its unique training methods in different regions is evident, along with his philosophies and dedication to artist development.
K-pop as a 'Total Package'... Requires the Sensitivity of an Artist and the Strength of an Athlete
In the documentary, Chairman Bang stated, "Not every member can be the best singer or dancer, but they must all meet a certain standard to join the team." This underscores that possessing only one specific talent, like vocal ability, performance, or star quality, isn't enough to become a K-pop artist; one must be well-rounded in all areas.
In a 2018 TV lecture program in Korea, he explained, "K-pop idols operate with complex elements functioning simultaneously to convey their individual concepts to the public." He further expressed, "K-pop is a 'total package' of impressive stage performances, music reflecting global trends, appealing visuals, and high-quality music videos," highlighting the multifaceted nature of K-pop.
The U.S.-based producers and staff responsible for KATSEYE's training also resonated with Bang's philosophy, applying it to the audition participants. For example, Shohei, a dance trainer, remarked, "Dancers are both artists and athletes. They must train like athletes while expressing creativity like artists," mirroring Bang’s holistic approach.
International music markets also recognize K-pop's success as stemming from its artists' comprehensive artistry. The Washington Post, in its 2022 analysis "How K-pop Conquered the World," pointed out that K-pop's popularity is driven by its catchy songs, intricate choreography, and dazzling music videos, all contributing to its complete package appeal.
Star Power is Important, But... "Without the 'Team,' the Individual Doesn't Exist"
During the KATSEYE audition last year, Chairman Bang designed the second mission around the theme of 'team.' He stressed, "Team members are crucial business partners, so it's essential to know how to collaborate, maintain proper manners, and keep appropriate distance in relationships," indicating the lesson he hoped the participants would take from the mission.
In the documentary, Bang reiterated the significance of individual star power, stating, "There are people you can't take your eyes off just because they're on stage." However, he emphasized that in K-pop's multi-member groups, each member plays a distinct role, underlining the importance of a cohesive team where individuality blends harmoniously.
Global K-pop experts and fans alike recognize that the synchronization of dance performances and the 'chemistry' between members stem from strong teamwork. While there are some doubts about whether the U.S. music industry can fully embrace the K-pop-style training that prioritizes the group over the individual, KATSEYE’s successful debut has shown that this is indeed possible. Reactions on social media and fan communities from viewers of 'Pop Star Academy: KATSEYE' have expressed, "It’s impressive and touching to see participants from different countries growing while embracing K-pop’s 'we' mentality in the training system."
The Final Puzzle Piece of K-pop... Understanding the Value of 'Fandom'
Bang’s philosophy that “K-pop is completed by the fans” remains firm. One of the reasons for conducting one of the three missions in Korea, along with an offline fan meeting, was to highlight the importance of connecting with fans. He explained, “Communication with the core fandom is essential in K-pop. They value being physically under the same sky. I wanted the fans to develop an attachment to the participants even before their debut," detailing the reason behind bringing the contestants to Korea.
When asked about the three most important qualities K-pop artists should have, Bang named “making fans happy” as one of them. He advised, “It’s normal to feel tired sometimes as a human, but if you focus on making fans happy through music and performances, it will motivate you to keep going,” reminding participants always to keep fans in mind throughout their training.
Bang has also consistently stressed the importance of fans to the artists he has personally produced. In interviews, it was revealed that he often advises groups like TXT and ENHYPEN, saying, “There are no artists without fans. Fans should always come first and be treasured the most,” which influences their social interactions with fans as well.
A HYBE representative shared, "Chairman Bang’s long-held dream has been to globalize K-pop not just by exporting its artists and content but by exporting its systems. The global expansion of K-pop’s production system, as realized through KATSEYE, will continue to be tested and validated."
