Global music media giant Billboard has announced the official launch of 'Billboard Korea' in South Korea.
On the 15th, Billboard revealed that the inaugural issue 'BillboardK Vol.1' will be published in June, marking the official commencement in Korea.
Billboard is an American music entertainment media brand under Penske Media Corporation, a leading global media group.
Previously, Billboard attempted to establish Billboard Korea in 2009 and 2017, but operations were discontinued. The relaunch of Billboard Korea under Penske Media Corporation, which acquired Billboard in 2020, has garnered significant attention.
Ahead of the publication of this inaugural issue, Billboard Korea plans to kick off a major launch promotion starting with the opening of its official website and digital platforms in April and May.
Through the publication of 'BillboardK', they aim to spread K-pop to global fans and quickly deliver information about the American entertainment industry to Korea, serving as a bridge for the development of the global music industry.
Billboard Korea's Publisher Yuna Kim: "We Aim to Be an Ambassador for K-Culture"
Yuna Kim, the publisher of Billboard Korea, stated, "At a time when K-artists and K-pop enjoy high esteem worldwide, 'Billboard Korea' aims to act as an ambassador, promoting not just K-pop, but also K-fashion, K-beauty, and K-food - the various aspects of K-culture."
Mike Van, the representative of Billboard headquarters, expressed his excitement about the venture into Korea. In an official statement, he said, "We are delighted to announce our expansion into Korea. Billboard has long celebrated the significant contributions Korean music has made across our platform. This expansion is a significant milestone for our brand and underscores our commitment to amplify the voices and talents that shape the vibrant Korean music scene."
Leveraging its authoritative global brand power, Billboard Korea plans to collaborate with leading Korean entertainment and platform companies and brands to produce high-quality content and develop business in various areas including charts and performances.
With this launch, Billboard Korea joins the international editions of Billboard, including Billboard Japan, Billboard Arabia, Billboard España, and Billboard Brazil, in the Billboard International publications lineup.
I think this is just another way for western music corporations to keep gatekeep the main Billboard charts.
