EXCLUSIVE
[INTERVIEW] Sorn talks 'Rowdy,' reuniting and working with Seungyeon on the track, and more

AKP STAFF

Sorn is back with new music but now with her fellow CLC member Seungyeon, serving as a reunion track for the duo. Titled "Rowdy," the duo team up to deliver a sobering message to their rowdy suitors: play nice, or forget about the prize. This marks the solo artist's sixth single under WILD Group.

"This is special to me because it’s very focused on female empowerment, and I’m so glad I get to share that with Seungyeon," said Sorn. "We really just had fun with this one."

allkpop had the opportunity to chat with Sorn once again but now with her experience of working on "Rowdy" with Seungyeon, the track's creative process, her rapping part in the song, and more. Read the full exclusive interview below.

allkpop: What made you decide to release "Rowdy" as your first collaboration song with Seungyeon?

Sorn: I started this new track with the idea of doing a song collaboration with Seungyeon. So of course, if it’s Seungyeon then it has to be something more upbeat that includes a dance in it. After "Not A Friend" had just been released, we were browsing through various Y2K tracks and were so inspired by the song "Hollaback Girl" by Gwen Stefani. That was how the concept of "Rowdy" basically started. With the powerful beat, I thought Seungyeon would be able to 100% do something with the dance. And that’s why we started on the track right away.

allkpop: The song is focused on female empowerment. How do you empower yourself and the people around you, particularly women?

Sorn: I try my best in everything I do and I work hard in my career. I’m not afraid to do new things and I’m so comfortable in my own skin that I’m never afraid to be myself on or off screen. I think that is how I gain confidence when it comes to my music. I’m not afraid to be myself and speak my mind through my lyrics. Being able to be real with your audience is everything when it comes to music. As an artist, I try to encourage not only the people around me but also my fans to be their authentic selves and go for what they want in life, without caring about what others think.

allkpop: Tell us about how it feels about reuniting with Seungyeon after a while!

Sorn: It’s been a great experience being able to work with Seungyeon again. It’s always a good time when you get to reunite with someone that you’ve spent so many years working with. I feel like throughout this whole process, we both didn’t feel like we were working but we were just hanging out and having fun. It’s always helpful to have someone who understands both your strengths and weaknesses so well.

allkpop: Any memorable stories from the MV filming and recording process? How was it trying to rap for this one? It turned out great!

Sorn: MV filming in South Korea was really enjoyable! It was our first time filming in public, so it was very different from our usual studio shoot. It was more relaxing and freestyle than we thought. I actually think I might not want to film in the studio anymore after getting the experience of filming outside. We both also had a lot of fun recording this song because we actually flew Seungyeon to Singapore for a few days to record the song with me. I had so much fun directing her in the studio along with spending time with her while she was here. It was difficult for me to rap on a song for the first time because I never got any training for it before. But I kept practicing and practicing until I could get the flow. I’m glad I was able to try it. After experiencing what it’s like to rap on a song, I’m no longer scared to be more adventurous on my future tracks. I think at this point, anything is possible.

allkpop: You took part by co-writing this song. How was your experience? And have you now found your style in writing, that maybe we could look forward to your participation once you release your anticipated EP?

Sorn: The experience of writing songs has always been a challenge for me. But as always it’s really good to be able to get the opportunity to try new things with other professionals that guide you along the way. Hopefully, while working on my EP, I will be able to help write even more. Wish me luck!

allkpop: In our interview earlier this year, you said that it kind of felt very lonely because 'We The Fest' was your official first big stage in 2022 after not being with your members. Just this July, you performed again on the stage but now with Seungyeon! Tell us what it felt like performing as a duo. Did it feel different?

Sorn: This year was a completely different vibe for me. I felt like last year was a lot of pressure for me because it was my first time performing alone, but this year I felt more confident and had so much fun being able to share the stage with Seungyeon. I not only had fun performing on the day but the practicing process was super enjoyable for me as well. Seungyeon really made everything more comfortable for me. Thanks to her I was able to be more of myself for the stage this year!

allkpop: Can we expect more from both of you? More collaboration songs or maybe just special stages?

Sorn: Hopefully, we’ll have more opportunities to perform "Rowdy" for our other fans from other parts of the world. I would love to work on more music with Seungyeon, my other members along with other artists from all over the world. Right now, I’m busy working on my own music, but I am always down to collaborate with other artists!

allkpop: There are only 4 months left until 2023 ends. Do you still have goals left for this year, and how do you keep working on them?

Sorn: I still want to push out as many songs as I can this year and possibly an EP soon. For the rest of this year, I will be busy working on a big project that hopefully I’ll be able to announce to you all very soon! So please stay tuned, something big is coming!

allkpop: Lastly, feel free to leave a message to everyone!

Sorn: As always, thank you to everyone for all the love and support with my music. I hope that you guys will always stay happy and healthy. Don’t forget to go stream my latest song "Rowdy." Stay tuned for more music to come in the near future!

does she have a large following in SK? wouldn't she be more successful if she promoted in her native language and country?

I really like CLC and Sorn has had some good releases. I was very excited to see her with another CLC member. But I did not personally enjoy this song at all :(
