NewJeans may not be permitted to perform in Vietnam due to the alleged political affiliations of member Hanni.
Since February 2023, Australian-Vietnamese member Hanni has been facing political backlash in Vietnam. Hanni was born in Melbourne, Australia but her parents and grandparents are from Vietnam. Back in February, one of the biggest K-pop communities in Vietnam on Meta, K Crush Động, posted alleged family pictures of Hanni. The group then pointed out old emblems of the South Vietnamese regime inside Hanni's family house and businesses in the pictures and accused Hanni's family of still being supportive of South Vietnam.
South Vietnam or the Republic of Vietnam was the U.S.-backed state that existed from 1955 until the end of the Vietnam War in 1975. Now that the Vietnamese Communist Party governs the country, the alleged loyalty or association with South Vietnam has resulted in a major backlash against the idol member. Some even speculate Vietnamese Communist Party censors content related to NewJeans because of this very reason.
Of course, not everyone is hating on Hanni and NewJeans but it has been said that unspoken societal pressure is making stanning the group in public less desirable. An insider in Vietnam commented, "There certainly are fans who support NewJeans regardless of ongoing political arguments but it is iffy to overtly support them in public. But there was no official censorship from the government or the media."
He continued, "NewJeans and Hanni are well recognized in Vietnam but it is true that there are many people who are against the group. And it seems unlikely that NewJeans will be permitted to perform in Vietnam by the government."
Politics makes things worse 100% of the time, without exception. It needs to stay out of entertainment. She's not there to push a political agenda, she's performing songs.
