Many netizens and manhwa (Korean comic) readers are wondering why Naver Webtoon is continuing to serialize 'True Beauty' even after the tax evasion controversy surrounding its author Yaongyi.
'True Beauty' creator Yaongyi is facing backlash after she continues to upload new episodes of her popular webtoon series following her tax evasion controversy.
Earlier this year, the National Tax Service cracked down on tax evasions and audited various individuals, including young influencers, YouTubers, Webtoon artists, and others who flaunted their wealth on social media. Among the individuals singled out was a webtoon artist in her 30s.
Last month The National Tax Service announced that "a famous webtoon writer established a corporation and evaded value-added tax by reporting the supply of works subject to value-added tax as duty-free sales."
The National Tax Service stated that the artist leaked corporate funds by having family members who do not actually work there, be paid on paper and accounting for fictitious labor costs (to increase her expenses and reduce her tax burden). Furthermore, the National Tax Service revealed that the webtoon artist was living an extravagant lifestyle, buying costly luxury items with a corporate credit card and flaunting them on social media, as well as using a corporate supercar for personal purposes.
Initially, the National Tax Service did not specify who the webtoon writer was. However, since Yaongyi has posted photos of several supercars, such as McLaren and Ferrari, on her social media, as well as luxury goods, such as Chanel and Hermes, readers suspected that she was the webtoon artist who evaded taxes. Then, Yaongti posted on social media confirming that she was the webtoon artist who went through the tax audit.
According to the webtoon artist, she diligently abided by the tax investigation, but she did not use the corporate cards and vehicles for her personal use. She outlined the disagreement concerning the legal interpretation of the value-added tax for the publishing industry and the webtoon industry and promised to adhere to her tax obligations and due diligence in the future.
Despite the latest tax evasion, Yaongyi's webtoon is continuing to be serialized, and now netizens are directing criticism to Naver Webtoon. Some point out that the main story of the webtoon has already been completed, but 'True Beauty' has continued serializing with 20 additional chapters of its prequel.
In particular, netizens point out that Naver Webtoon continued to upload paid chapters, in which readers must pay to read new chapters, even after the tax evasion controversy. Netizens commented, "How long are you going to suck the money out of the readers?" "Shouldn't the series stop if there was a controversy with the author?" and "Should they continue releasing even after the tax controversy?"
Meanwhile, 'True Beauty' began serialization in 2018, and it's a series with global readers in English, Spanish, Thai, French, and more. With its popularity, the series was also created into a Korean drama.
Stop. Take a hiatus, go learn how to draw better and make your characters become "4D". Make a new series about tax evaders.
