The free BTS concert to be held in Busan on the 15th of next month to help Busan with the attraction for the 2030 World Expo (Expo) is less than a month away, and concerns are increasing as it has not yet been confirmed who will be paying the expenses.
The free BTS concert 'BTS Yet to Come in BUSAN' was planned to promote Busan to the world, but the cost will not be paid by the city of Busan or the government. However, it turns out that the Busan Expo Bidding Committee had sent emails to large corporations in South Korea asking to sponsor the concert expenses.
There have been constant controversies and concern regarding the upcoming BTS concert in Busan. After changing the venue to the Busan Asiad Main Stadium over safety and logistics concerns, there have also been controversies over the overpriced accommodation prices in Busan.
Additionally, there is continuing concern over who will take the 7 billion KRW (5.1 million USD) bill for the concert. It has been confirmed that the city of Busan and the government will not pay. Therefore, it is expected that HYBE will be the one paying for all the expenses. With the uncertainty of the payer, the burden on HYBE is increasing.
Recently, it has been confirmed that the Busan Expo Bidding Committee sent emails to large corporations last month. According to KBS, the email was sent to the ten largest corporations in South Korea and requested that they participate in the event sponsorship. The email is also said to include the contact information of an HYBE official who is in charge.
However, according to the individual who sent the email from the Busan Expo Bid Committee, it was HYBE that asked the committee to send the letter. The official explained, "We didn't send the letter ourselves but we just delivered it because we were asked." On the other hand, HYBE denies they had requested any letter to be sent and the HYBE official in charge explained, "We asked? I didn't even know there was an email..."
The companies that decided to sponsor the Busan event explained they decided to sponsor the concert at their own discretion, regardless of the email from the bid committee.
Nevertheless, it seems that the government is continuing to gain criticism as it passed on the cost of a national project to private companies.
The Busan World Expo committee just keeps outing themselves as being unorganized and unable to fund and run an expo.
