NiziU is JYP’s and Sony Music's newest girl group and first ever Japanese based Kpop/Jpop girl group. They came from the survival program NiZi Project where members Mako, Rio, Maya, Riku, Ayaka, Mayuka, Rima, Mihii, and Nina got the chance to debut in the new hot girl group. The group is aimed towards a global audience, as members are fluent in Japanese, Korean, English, and more.
They released their predebut single “Make You Happy” this summer, with both a Japanese & Korean version of the song & MV. The song & dance became a huge hit in Japan that still represents itself as the hot trend. Make You Happy even surpassed 185 Million views on YouTube.
They have recently come out with their official debut titled Step and a Step, which has become another successful hit for the group.
The song not only did well on charts, but notably in sales too. NiziU has sold 312,000 albums in just their first week, even more than a lot of notable established Kpop or even Jpop girl groups sell generally, let alone for their debut release.
Their debut is also the 2nd highest selling girl group debut release in history, only second to Hinatazaka46.
This is interesting considering the success of Twice & Keyakizaka46 (now known as Sakurazaka46) who had similar success stories during their debut eras representing JYP Girl Groups & Sakamichi Girl Groups (or 46G), and now their little sister groups follow that success into the new generation.
NiziU success has become very remarkable not only on the basis of being a rookie girl group, but a group produced by a Kpop company based in an overseas country. SM is also notable in this with the success of WayV, the Chinese unit of NCT, which consists of members Kun, Ten, WinWin, Lucas, Xiaojun, Hendery, and YangYang. Like NiziU, they also focus on both the market they're based in and the Korean market, considering they’ve had activities in both countries and music in both languages.
Look forward to more good things to come from NiziU
