The Seoul High Court revealed on April 26 that they have followed the lower court's decision to sentence the mother, a 65-year-old woman, to 12 years in prison.
The woman was arrested last September for murdering her son's then girlfriend with a lethal weapon near her home in Seoul's Yongsan District. It was investigated that the woman had arrived at the conclusion her son dating his girlfriend was preventing him from working, and thus placing the family in a financial mire.
It was also revealed that the mother and her son's girlfriend often clashed before the incident occurred. Three days before the murder, the girlfriend had reportedly caused a drunken ruckus at the woman's home. The woman berated the girlfriend for her crass behavior but when the girlfriend retorted, the woman reportedly snapped and murdered her. Investigation revealed that the woman's son had dialed the authorities when his mother and his girlfriend started arguing.
During the woman's first trial, the court ruled her guilty and sentenced her to 12 years in prison. The second trial resulted in the same ruling, with the court upholding the sentence from the first hearing. The woman tried to argue that the sentence was too severe; however, the courts were firm in their ruling.
