According to a recent survey conducted by the Korea Research Center from this past December 11 to December 18, four out of ten Koreans were found to wish that they were born in another country. This is a higher percentage than the other countries that were also a part of the survey, including Denmark, Brazil, and Japan.
Only 8.8% of Japanese people wished that they were born in another country, and 10.4% of Danes. On the other hand, 37.2% of Brazilians wished that they were born in a different country, closer to the 40% of Koreans.

The primary reasons for almost half of Koreans wishing that they were reborn in a different country were as follows: 19.5% chose 'fierce competition'; 18.5% 'distrust in government'; 17.8% 'societal corruption'; 16.2% 'low quality of life'; and 14.8% 'discontent with society.'
Meanwhile, the other countries that participated in the survey had considerably low percentages for 'fierce competition.' Only 6.9% of Danes, 4% of Brazilians, and 2.6% of Japanese wished that they were born in another country because of competition, indicating that Koreans see competition as a factor that gives them much distress and burden in society.
