Wait! Don't judge a book by its cover! Before that header image makes you mash the 'back' button, take a few minutes to sample their tracks. Trust me, I almost cut and run after I saw their album jacket, but then I would have missed out on some truly fresh music. What you're looking at is Hongdae's newest rising indie band, Rose Motel. These guys are so indie that there's not a lot of info on them. Heck, they don't even have profile pictures, much less a search portal profile other than basic member information. Rose Motel is comprised of Kang Jun Woo (guitar, vocal), Yook Joong Wan (guitar, vocal), and Im Kyung Sub (drums). The trio debuted in November of 2011 with their single, "You'll Never Get Married At That Rate", which consists of only three songs. Though small, it shows what they're capable of as it ranges from a simple acoustic arrangement to Latin flavors and bossa nova influences. What stands out the most, though, are their lyrics. These boys tell it like it is -- if their title track, "You'll Never Get Married At That Rate" is any indication, they won't quake before the opinions of others, nor are they afraid of saying what others are too self-conscious to spit out. There's a sincere, unrefined feel to them that you can sense through their raw Busan accents and unrestricted lines. If you're tired of the same, over-processed songs that come armed with all of the bells and whistles that make you dizzy, Rose Motel is exactly what you are looking for. < Lyrics > You make me so depressed, so depressed, so depressed You make me so depressed, just seeing your face pisses me off Until when are you going to live like leeches, sucking the life out of everyone else You're old but you don't have a job or a penny under your name You should live hard under such circumstances, but instead you're drinking and causing a ruckus My head is spinning, spinning, spinning because of you I'm going crazy, crazy, crazy because of you If I weren't your friend, I'd give you a smack and cut off all contact How can that alcohol go down, down, down your throat How can that spoonful of rice go down, down, down your throat You pathetic being, if you don't wake up and fix your life You'll never get married at that rate If you're thinking that you might hit jackpot later in life How about you feed that thought to your dog Even after you sleep all day and wake up from your hangover You still manage to make it to church There you are praying to hit jackpot on a lottery How about you write a novel instead ["Bongsookah" takes a dramatic change in style by incorporating a bossa nova feel while still using their acoustic roots as their base. The vocalists make no effort to hide their distinctive Busan accents, giving the song a countrified feel at the same time. The lyrics are still comedic, but with a bit more meaning behind them. They croon, "I'm still lost today, looking for love, looking for people."] -- Be sure to check out our other Unhyped Talents here!
