On June 14, (G)I-DLE's Yuqi appeared as a guest on MBC's 'Radio Star', where she shared the story of her difficult(?) debut!
On this day, it was pointed out that Yuqi has always been a big fan of K-Pop, which ultimately led her to her dreaming of becoming a K-Pop star herself one day. She said, "In middle school, I was in a dance team. We even held a K-Pop festival."
She went on, "I am a very big fan of Super Junior. So it was always my dream to go to SM Entertainment. I auditioned for SM Entertainment's global auditions in Beijing 4 times. After the fourth time, I saw that Cube Entertainment was also having auditions the week afterward, so I went ahead and auditioned for Cube too. But then, I got a call back from both companies."
This earned a great reaction from the 'Radio Star' MCs, as Yuqi continued, "It was a huge struggle, choosing which company to go to. SM was always my dream, after all. But then at that time, 4minute was making it big at Cube. So then I thought, 'Well, it's true that I'm cute and pretty and my visuals fit SM, but my voice is so Cube. It is husky and more fitting for a 'girl crush' concept'."
What ultimately sealed the deal was the offer by Cube: "At the time, the director at Cube promised me, 'Yuqi, if you sign with us, you will be able to debut by next year'. That was why I chose Cube."
Finally, Yuqi expressed her great love and appreciation for her idols, Super Junior, saying, "I would not be here as a K-Pop idol today if it weren't for Super Junior." When asked which member is her favorite member of Super Junior, Yuqi answered, "Ryeowook sunbaenim. I remember, I always watched 'Radio Star' when I was a kid to watch Ryeowook sunbaenim."
Cube sucks, but let’s be real, Yuqi would not thrive under SM.
