ATEEZ's Hongjoong released a cover of Michael Jackson's "Black or White." For the cover, Hongjoong has prepared every detail such as the new meaningful lyrics, the concept, the set design which the video shot, and he even made the clothes by his own hands. He talks about the message he wants to give in the producing process part that begins after the cover:
"I usually say this artist is my role model and one of my favourite artists, i chose Michael Jackson's song. I wanted to do something like 'Let's put some social messages into videos and songs!' so i chose "Black and White". When Michael Jackson was alive he emphasized social issues or peace a lot. I want to continue what he did. And I'll try to tell those through my own way."
"It took me long to think about how I should arrange the song. I wanted to keep the original vibe of 'Black and White' for the beginning of the song. But on the chorus, I'll use sounds which are familiar to our ages. You'll listen to this song in early summer. So I'll try to make this song that we can feel summer."
"While I was working on 'Black and White', what message I wanted to put was "Let's become one regardless of the races or colors." It feels like singing along all together."
In the re-arrangement of the song there is gayaguem sounds (*traditional Korean instrument), he says the combination of traditional sounds and western hip-hop sounds in the cover means:
"I wanted to tell 'Let's become one regardless of the Orient and the Western.' It might be something that only I myself would know though."
" 'To make the world with no discrimination': that is the meaning inside of my cover."
