Another "miracle" has occurred on Korean music charts as of May 21. On this day, a single released back on September 25, 2018 titled "If There Was Practice In Love" by solo singer Lim Jae Hyun has topped Melon at #1, beating out some of this spring's top trending songs including Jannabi's "For Lovers Who Hesitate", BTS's "Boy With Luv", WINNER's "Ah Yeah", Park Hyo Shin's "Goodbye", and more.
Lim Jae Hyun's "If There Was Practice In Love" is the soloist's debut single, released after the vocalist's earlier promotions as a singer for OSTs, participating in other producers' tracks, etc. Reportedly, the song first garnered the public's attention some time after a killer cover by Monday Kiz member Lee Jin Sung. Since then, its popularity allegedly spread by "word of mouth".
However, netizens are skeptical of the real cause which prompted Lim Jae Hyun's debut single to rise to the top of Melon. As other artists like Nilo also faced 'chart manipulation' or 'sajaegi' accusations in the past, many are raising questions about the reliability of domestic music charts' calculations systems.
Some comments included, "I think 'Way Back Home' [by Shaun] was real. But this song isn't even good", "I've never heard of this person or this song, but it's #1???", "Can they please investigate the chart systems instead of just 'taking' about it", "There's no way this song beat out an idol fandom at 1 AM without help", "I got curious so I listened to it and it sounds like every other mediocre ballad song...", "Why is it only #1 on Melon?", and more.
You can listen to Lim Jae Hyun's "If there Was Practice In Love" for yourself, above.
It's funny how these netizens thinks it's fake that it reached nr 1 when it's been on the chart for a while, but doesn't think it's wrong that some idol's song reach nr 1 because their fandom is streaming it in the middle of the night... Not chart manipulation at all...
