Kim Na Jeong, a freelance announcer who drew public attention by admitting on social media to using drugs in the Philippines, has been transferred to the prosecution. Despite her claim of being forcibly made to use drugs, the police concluded that there was insufficient evidence to prove coercion.
On January 24, the Narcotics Investigation Division of the Gyeonggi Northern Provincial Police Agency announced that Kim was transferred without detention on charges of violating the Narcotics Control Act, specifically for using methamphetamine and synthetic marijuana.
Kim is accused of consuming drugs while in the Philippines. Last year, on November 12, she posted a controversial confession on social media before leaving Manila, saying, “I am turning myself in for using drugs in the Philippines. I feel like I’m going to die and cannot board the plane.” The post sparked significant public debate.
She returned to South Korea through Incheon International Airport, where the Incheon Airport Police investigated her. The case was later handed over to the Gyeonggi Northern Police Agency based on her residential jurisdiction.
Meanwhile, Kim claimed that her drug use was coerced by a local businessman in the Philippines. She provided evidence to support this claim, but the police deemed it insufficient to prove coercion. However, the police have requested that the Korean National Police Agency’s International Crimes Division further investigate the businessman named in Kim’s allegations.
As investigations into related parties continue, the case remains a topic of significant public interest.
