South Korean police have launched an investigation into Johnny Somali (real name Ramsey Khalid Ismael) on charges of business obstruction and suspected drug use. The controversial streamer is prohibited from leaving the country during the ongoing investigation.
The YouTuber recently sparked outrage in South Korea due to a series of offensive actions. He angered many South Koreans when he displayed blatant disrespect toward the statue of peace honoring "comfort women."
On November 7, Johnny Somali apologized for his actions in front of the statue stating, "Guys, I want to apologize for being disrespectful." He continued to say, "I want to apologize to the Korean people, I was not aware of the significance of the statue. It was just an entertainment for my audience. We're from America, we really don't know much about the comfort women."
Johnny Somali has faced significant backlash, with many criticizing his apology as being insincere, noting that it came only after he was barred from leaving Korea. Many are stating that the streamer seemed more focused on making excuses and claiming ignorance than taking genuine responsibility for his actions.
Additionally, Johnny Somali has yet to delete the various photos and videos of his controversial actions during his stay in Korea, leading more people to doubt the sincerity of his apology.
