The Korea Football Association has officially cancelled all 'Street Cheering' events for the '2022 Qatar World Cup'.
'Street Cheering' events are a tradition for South Koreans during the 'World Cup' where fans gather in the streets of major spots like Gwanghwamun Plaza, Seoul Plaza, Shinchon, etc, to cheer on the South Korean national soccer team.
However, after the shock of the Itaewon tragedy on October 29, the Korea Football Association has decided to cancel all 'Street Cheering' events for this year's 'Qatar World Cup', signaling that mourning will likely continue for the nation even after the end of the national mourning period on November 5.
The KFA revealed on November 4, "It was decided that holding street cheering events in Seoul not even a month after the tragedy would not be in agreement with the emotional climate of the people. We would like to relay this decision in the hopes of offering consolation to the families of the victims, as well as all those who are suffering during this time of mourning."
The association will be submitting cancellations of all Gwanghwamun Plaza gathering permits later this week.
Meanwhile, during the '2018 Russia World Cup', the Korea Football Association promoted its 'Street Cheering' events in collaboration with the city of Seoul.
South Korea's first match of the '2022 Qatar World Cup' will take place on November 24 against Uruguay.
I’m sure I’m in the minority but I agree with their decision. It’s too soon for these events after such a tragedy.
