Singer-songwriter Olivia Marsh has admitted to plagiarism and swiftly reached a settlement with the original artist.
On the night of February 24, her agency, MPLIFY, released an official statement addressing the plagiarism controversy surrounding "Backseat." Earlier, discussions arose about the song’s similarities to American singer Isaac Dunbar’s "Onion Boy."
Isaac Dunbar himself spoke out on social media, claiming, "I wrote and produced 'Onion Boy' by myself in my bedroom in 2019." Acknowledging the issue, MPLIFY stated that there was merit to Dunbar's claims and recognized the similarities between the two songs.
The agency moved quickly to resolve the matter, announcing, "We have reached an amicable settlement with Isaac Dunbar. We are currently handling all necessary procedures, including adjusting composition rights and crediting the original artist to ensure his rights are protected."
They also promised to improve internal oversight, stating, "We will take this as a lesson and ensure that such incidents do not happen again. We sincerely apologize to Isaac Dunbar and the fans who were disappointed by this situation."
Meanwhile, Olivia Marsh debuted as a singer-songwriter in October last year with her self-written song "42." On February 13, she released her first full album, 'Meanwhile'. She is also well known as the older sister of NJZ member Danielle.
