The divorce conflict between Choi Min Hwan and Yul Hee has drawn significant public attention. Journalist Ahn Jin Yong analyzed their claims on his YouTube channel, 'All that star', providing a fact-check-based perspective on the case. The key issues in this dispute revolve around alimony, division of assets, child custody, and living expenses.
Yul Hee submitted a petition requesting alimony of $70,000, division of assets worth $700,000, changes in custody and guardianship, the transfer of her children, and monthly child support payments. The child support payments requested amount to $3,500 per month until May 17, 2037, and $2,000 per month until February 10, 2039. These demands became a focal point of contention as Choi Min Hwan argued that such matters were already resolved during their divorce settlement.
According to Ahn Jin Yong’s fact-checking, the building Yul Hee requested as part of the asset division was acquired in 2015, before their marriage, and is classified as Min Hwan’s personal property, which is not subject to division under Korean law. Legal precedent also supports that only jointly acquired assets during the marriage are eligible for division. Choi Min Hwan emphasized that these demands contradict the agreements made during their divorce settlement.
Yul Hee claimed that Min Hwan’s visits to karaoke were a major cause of their divorce. However, fact-checking revealed that the karaoke venue in question was also used to celebrate Yul Hee’s birthday, indicating it was not of a problematic nature. Allegations of solicitation related to these visits were investigated by the police and resulted in Min Hwan being cleared of all charges. Min Hwan admitted to visiting karaoke, apologized, and reconciled with Yul Hee at the time, but the issue resurfaced.
Regarding Choi Min Hwan’s appearance on TV show 'The Return of Superman', Yul Hee claimed in a personal broadcast that her opinions were not considered. However, fact-checking revealed that both parties had discussed and agreed on the appearance beforehand, with Yul Hee prioritizing their children’s preferences. This discrepancy highlights inconsistencies between Yul Hee’s public statements and prior actions.
Fact-checking also confirmed Min Hwan’s financial contributions. In 2017, he paid Yul Hee’s agency termination penalty of $87,000. In 2019, he loaned $14,000 to Yul Hee’s father. From 2020 to 2021, he paid $22,000 in taxes that Yul Hee had failed to settle. Additionally, Min Hwan provided $35,000 as living expenses in July 2023 before their divorce and an extra $14,000 in August 2024. These records indicate Min Hwan was not negligent in providing financial support.
Ahn Jin Yong emphasized that he had no intention of siding with or criticizing either party. Instead, he aimed to analyze the claims of both sides based on facts, highlighting the complexity of the case. The journalist also mentioned that he had repeatedly offered Yul Hee the opportunity to respond, but no reply has been received so far.
