Singer Lee Seung Hwan has announced his participation in a rally calling for the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol.
On December 10th, Lee shared on his personal social media account: “This Friday, the Lee Seung Hwan Band will be performing at the Yoon Suk Yeol impeachment rally,” hinting at his attendance on December 13th.
Lee has previously voiced strong criticism of the current administration. His comments gained attention after the impeachment motion against President Yoon was dismissed during the National Assembly’s plenary session on December 7th due to insufficient votes. Out of 300 lawmakers, only 195 participated in the vote, falling short of the required 200. Among the attendees, only three members of the ruling People Power Party (An Cheol Soo, Kim Sang Wook, and Kim Ye Ji) participated.
Following the motion’s failure, Lee expressed his frustration on social media:
“Members of the ‘People’s Power’ party, I clearly saw how you willingly identified yourselves as accomplices to treason. You must be pleased with yourselves.”
"You must feel proud of your authority to disregard the will of nearly 80% of democratic citizens who desire impeachment.”
He continued his scathing remarks, saying:
"You don’t fear being labeled as criminals in history. Instead, you prioritize your current power. Even as lives are lost and citizens face hardships, you seem to think, ‘What can they do about it?’”
He also criticized the ruling party further:
“To the lawmakers of the ‘People’s-Above-the-People-Power’ party, thank you for your hard work talking about ‘the will of the people’ and ‘meeting public expectations.’ We democratic citizens of Korea will stay up all night and keep watch until we see the dawn break.”
On December 9th, Lee donated 12.13 million won (approximately $9,100) to the civic group Candlelight Action, which is advocating for President Yoon’s impeachment. This contribution aligns with his vocal support for the cause.
