President Yoon Suk Yeol declares martial law; singer Lee Seung Hwan adjusts concert schedule.
In an unprecedented move, President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law late at night on December 3rd KST, prompting singer Lee Seung Hwan to cancel his scheduled concerts. However, following the National Assembly’s approval of the “Martial Law Termination Resolution,” he announced the concerts would proceed as planned.
On the morning of December 4th, Lee posted on Instagram: “With the martial law lifted, ‘Like a Black and White Movie’ will proceed as scheduled. I apologize for the confusion. I have a lot to say today, and I look forward to meeting you with deeper stories and songs.”
Earlier that day, Lee had announced the cancellation of his concerts scheduled for December 4th and 5th, writing: “I regret to inform you that the concerts on December 4th and 5th for ‘Like a Black and White Movie’ have been canceled. Tickets will be fully refunded, and further details will be provided soon.”
President Yoon declared martial law in an emergency address from the Yongsan Presidential Office, stating: “I will thoroughly eliminate the anti-state forces that have caused chaos and destruction. This decision was inevitable to ensure the perpetuity of a free Republic of Korea.” This marked the first martial law declaration in 45 years, following the one in 1979.
In response, the National Assembly convened at 1:01 AM on December 4th to deliberate a “Martial Law Termination Resolution.” By 1:03 AM, the resolution passed unanimously with 190 votes.
Following the resolution, Lee updated fans: “Fortunately, the martial law termination resolution has been passed, but we cannot rest easy until the martial law is officially lifted. If the law is lifted by the morning, I will provide a positive update regarding the concerts.”
Lee Seung Hwan had been performing his concert series, Like a Black and White Movie, from December 3rd to 5th and scheduled additional performances from December 17th to 19th at the Under the Cloud Theater in Mapo, Seoul. The concert on December 3rd proceeded as planned.
