Hyun Bin expressed his love for his wife, Son Ye Jin.
On the December 18 broadcast of tvN's 'You Quiz on the Block' (hereafter "You Quiz"), Hyun Bin appeared as a guest ahead of the release of his new movie 'Harbin.'
Making his first talk show appearance in 13 years, Hyun Bin revealed that his parents initially opposed his decision to pursue acting. He shared, "I used to skip academy classes to practice plays, and one day I got caught when they called me. Since there were people in my family who pursued academics, my father couldn't accept it. Neither my father nor I gave in, and eventually, my father told me that if I got into the Department of Theater and Film at Chung-Ang University, he would allow it. That's how I ended up at Chung-Ang."
When asked to describe himself, Hyun Bin said, "I think I'm just an ordinary person." This prompted Yoo Jae Suk and Jo Se Ho to question, "In what way exactly?"
Yoo Jae Suk then commented, "It seems like you have that kind of mindset. When I see you working out, you’re quiet and don’t seem too concerned with your surroundings." Hyun Bin agreed, saying, "I think I’m someone who doesn’t get easily swayed by my surroundings."
Hyun Bin, who showed exceptional promise from the start, reflected on his audition for the movie 'He Was Cool.' He said, "I remember it vividly. It's one of those unforgettable moments."
He recalled, "It was a public audition, and at the time, there was a huge 'Ulzzang' (best face) craze, so a lot of Ulzzang contestants showed up. Fans even surrounded the building and were seated behind the judges. When I walked into the audition room, I thought, 'Where am I, and who am I?' To make it more nerve-wracking, I was the first one to audition."
Hyun Bin, who later rose to nationwide fame with the drama 'My Lovely Sam Soon,' admitted, "I couldn't really feel it at the time. I was too young to fully grasp it (the popularity)." At the time, Hyun Bin was 24 years old. Jo Se Ho then pointed at both Yoo Jae Suk and Hyun Bin, joking, "Aren't you both living the life of top stars?" In response, Hyun Bin moved his seat closer to Jo Se Ho and quipped, "If that's how it works, then this is where I should be," making everyone laugh.
His next hit drama was 'Secret Garden,' which sparked the "Kim Joo Won syndrome." Regarding the iconic tracksuit that became a trademark of his character, Hyun Bin revealed, "We had four of them made, and since they were custom-made by the stylist, I still have them." When Yoo Jae Suk asked, "Do you ever try them on from time to time?" Hyun Bin looked flustered and replied, "They don't fit anymore. My character had a very slim physique, but my body is bulkier now."
Despite enjoying immense popularity during 'Secret Garden,' Hyun Bin shared, "Just as I was starting to enjoy it a bit, I had to go to the military. There were so many people outside who were giving me love and support, but I was in the military."
The Hyun Bin phenomenon continued with the drama 'Crash Landing on You,' which he starred in alongside his wife, Son Ye Jin. Reflecting on the show, Hyun Bin said, "It’s a project that gave me so much. I received a lot of love, and I also got to meet my wife."
Hyun Bin and Son Ye Jin first met through the movie 'The Negotiation.' Describing their experience, Hyun Bin said, "At that time, we acted while only looking at monitors, like a split-screen broadcast. I remember thinking it would be fun to do a romantic comedy together, and we ended up reuniting for 'Crash Landing on You.'"
Yoo Jae Suk and Jo Se Ho couldn’t hide their curiosity about Hyun Bin and Son Ye Jin’s love story. When asked when their relationship officially began, Hyun Bin responded, "It’s hard to pinpoint an exact starting point. While working on the project, we had countless conversations, and even after that, we stayed in touch. There were also joint commercial shoots, and everything just happened naturally."
Regarding the advantages of being married to someone in the same profession, Hyun Bin said, "The biggest benefit is that we understand everything without having to explain it in detail. But that can also be a disadvantage because we know too much. We can predict, 'Ah, they must be done by now,' so there's no room for guessing," drawing laughter from everyone.
Hyun Bin recently sent a coffee truck to the set where Son Ye Jin was filming. He shared, "It was a surprise. This is her first project after our marriage. Plus, she’s working with a great team of people. I sent it under our son's name." Son Ye Jin is currently filming 'No Other Choice' with director Park Chan Wook.
During the interview, Hyun Bin reflected on Son Ye Jin's return to acting, saying, "She must have really wanted to act again after all this time. Watching me act probably made her want to do it even more. But as a mom, she had things she needed to take care of, so she endured it patiently. I feel a bit sorry for that. Seeing how excited she is for this project makes me feel even happier."
He also recalled how Son Ye Jin supported him after his own work. "After I finished filming 'Harbin,' I think she sensed the pressure I had been under. She told me I did a good job. So, when she finishes this project, I’ll make sure to tell her she did a great job too," he said, expressing his love and support for his wife.
Hyun Bin revealed that when he’s not filming, he tries to spend as much time as possible with his son. He admitted with a laugh "We usually go for walks outside and visit the playground. When we play at home, I do everything. I also read him storybooks, but I think my wife does a better job at that."
When asked if his son has any favorite phrases, Hyun Bin smiled and said, "He says 'dad' a lot." He added, "He loves anything with wheels. Especially motorcycles. When we go for walks with my wife, he greets all the delivery drivers he sees."
Lastly, Hyun Bin sent a heartfelt message to Son Ye Jin, saying, "From the moment our baby was born until now, seeing everything she does is truly amazing. I respect her, and I'm so grateful. It must have been difficult to fill in for me completely while I was away filming, but she endured it all so quietly and patiently. I’m really thankful for that. I’m also grateful that our son came to see me before I had to leave for overseas filming." He ended his message by making a finger-heart gesture.
Meanwhile, the movie 'Harbin,' starring Hyun Bin, is set to be released on November 24.
