Amid ongoing criticism from the entertainment industry over President Yoon Suk Yeol’s declaration of martial law, singer Seo Taiji, often referred to as the “Cultural President,” has spoken out.
On December 24th KST, Seo Taiji shared his thoughts via the official social media account of his company, Seo Taiji Company. He wrote, “Entering 2025 with yet another impeachment—what a Regret of the Times”
Seo Taiji is known for sharing updates only once a year, on Christmas Eve, through his company’s social media channels. His mention of “Regret of the Times” recalls the politically charged message of his iconic song from Seo Taiji and Boys’ fourth album, which became a defining anthem of resistance in 1995.
When the album was released, lyrics expressing disillusionment with societal structures were flagged by the Korean Performance Ethics Committee, resulting in the song being released as an instrumental track without lyrics. The incident sparked a public outcry and fan-led petitions, ultimately leading to the abolition of mandatory pre-screening for albums in 1996. This moment cemented Seo Taiji’s reputation as a trailblazer and cultural icon.
Seo Taiji continued, “It seems like many of our fans participated in the protests. Do the light sticks from back then still work? This time, I noticed many young people in their 20s participating—it reminded me of our old struggles and made me feel proud.”
He added, “Now, it’s our turn to support these young people who will lead the future. Let’s be the uncles and aunts who continue to cheer them on unwaveringly.”
Seo Taiji also extended warm wishes, saying, “Though these times are turbulent and there is still much to do, I hope that today, you can spend a warm and safe Christmas with your loved ones and friends.”
He concluded with a heartfelt promise: “I’ll return again, so don’t worry too much. Stay healthy and prepare for an exciting 2025.”
