On the December 11th episode of MBC's entertainment show 'Radio Star', actress Ha Yeon Soo made her first public broadcast appearance in three years, candidly discussing her experience starring in the Japanese historical drama 'The Tiger and Her Wings'.
she revealed, "I appeared in the NHK public broadcasting series 'The Tiger and Her Wings'. a period drama. It achieved a peak viewership rating of 20%, and a special broadcast is also planned. I consider myself lucky to be part of such a success."
However, she also shared the challenges she faced during the casting process. "The Japanese drama team asked me about Korean history, and I had to address unresolved historical issues such as the comfort women problem,"
Ha said. She admitted that landing the role wasn’t easy. "I spoke from a Korean perspective, but I was uncertain and overjoyed at the same time. Initially, the role was intended for a Taiwanese actor, but the drama became the first to acknowledge the massacre of Koreans during the Great Kanto Earthquake.
I found it meaningful to be part of such a project," she explained. Ha added, "In fact, NHK received complaints because a Korean actor was cast in the drama."
Ha also reflected on the backlash she faced in Korea. "I received criticism in Korea too, since the drama is set during the Japanese colonial period, and I played a Korean student studying in Japan, which could lead to misunderstandings.
However, I portrayed a lawyer advocating for Koreans who were victims of the atomic bomb, which I found deeply significant," she said, surprising the audience with her thoughtful perspective.
