Seo Hyun Jin and Gong Yoo captivated fans with their chemistry as a unique couple in the upcoming Netflix original series Trunk. On November 26, the cast and crew held a production press conference at Raum Art Center in Seoul's Gangnam District to share insights into the much-anticipated show.
Trunk, based on Kim Ryeo Ryeong's 2015 novel, unravels the enigmatic world of a secretive marriage service exposed by a trunk found floating near a lakeside. The series follows the intertwined lives of Noh In Ji (Seo Hyun Jin) and Han Jeong Won (Gong Yoo) as they navigate their peculiar "contract marriage." Exploring themes of love, loneliness, obsession, and redemption, the drama delves deeply into the characters' emotional complexities.
Director Kim Gyu Tae, known for hits like It’s Okay, That’s Love (2014) and Our Blues (2022), collaborates with screenwriter Park Eun Young from Hwarang (2016) to bring this intense mystery melodrama to life.
The pairing of Seo Hyun Jin and Gong Yoo, two widely respected actors under the same management agency, has drawn significant attention. Seo portrays Noh In Ji, a woman left alone by marriage, while Gong Yoo plays Han Jeong Won, whose own marriage left him deeply isolated. Together, their on-screen synergy promises to be unforgettable, as their characters seek to heal each other's hidden scars.
Director Kim expressed immense satisfaction with the cast, describing Seo and Gong as his "top-choice actors." He praised their commitment to authenticity and their ability to convey "real emotions" on screen. "The two are not only masters of their craft but also incredibly endearing," he added.
Seo shared her fascination with Trunk, noting its narrative subtlety and openness to interpretation. "The script has a lot of space for creative expression," she said, comparing her character to a "hermit crab" who shields her soft inner self with a hard outer shell.
Meanwhile, Gong Yoo revealed that his admiration for Seo’s work, especially in Another Miss Oh (2016), motivated him to join the project. "I wanted to see Seo Hyun Jin’s performance up close," he admitted, adding that their mutual understanding of the script brought them closer on set.
Addressing the portrayal of emotionally charged scenes, including intimate ones, Director Kim emphasized their narrative necessity. "These scenes serve to deepen the characters' emotions and add to the story's coherence. We approached them with restraint," he explained.
Gong Yoo described his character, Han Jeong Won, as deeply wounded by a traumatic past. "He lives an isolated life, plagued by nightmares and dependent on sleeping pills," Gong shared. Despite his emotional turmoil, Jeong Won remains unaware of his own vulnerability, a detail Gong found particularly poignant.
Seo’s portrayal of Noh In Ji, a woman wrestling with duality, was lauded by the director. "She brought a depth to Noh In Ji that even I struggled to comprehend at times," Kim said, commending Seo’s ability to convey the character’s layered psyche with remarkable precision.
Trunk marks a rare collaboration between two actors celebrated for their transformative performances. The series, exploring love in its most intricate forms, is set to premiere exclusively on Netflix on November 29.
