Netflix has acknowledged an error in the use of 'East Sea' as 'Sea of Japan' in the subtitles of some languages for its original series 'The 8 Show' and is taking steps to rectify it. The streaming giant stated, "We have confirmed that the ‘East Sea’ mentioned by a character in the show is indicated as the Sea of Japan in the subtitles of some languages, and we are in the process of correcting it. We will review whether there are similar cases and make every effort to translate accurately in the future. Thank you for the feedback."
Controversy arose when the Spanish subtitle incorrectly labeled the 'East Sea' as the 'Sea of Japan' during a scene where actor Ryu Joon Yeol sings the national anthem on 'The 8 Show'. Professor Seo Gyeong Deok from Sungshin Women’s University, who discovered the error due to reports from netizens, promptly sent a protest email to Netflix, citing the company's global influence.
Despite the recent popularity surge of 'The 8 Show', ranking first in Netflix's Global Top 10 Series (Non-English) category, the mislabeling drew attention. Professor Seo, known for advocating for accuracy in subtitles, previously requested a correction from Netflix for labeling 'kimchi' as 'pao chai' on its Chinese subtitle service. Emphasizing the importance of sensitivity to local issues, Professor Seo continues her global campaign to change the name 'Sea of Japan' to 'East Sea'.

Netflix needs to get better translators and tell them to stay as faithful as possible to the original dialogue, they be changing the meaning, adding and removing stuff for no reason, also a lot of times some context is lost because Netflix doesn't bother to translate the nuances of certain terms
